Which stream of the Knowledge Asset Grant Fund is right for your project?

Posted by: , Posted on: - Categories: Knowledge Asset Grant Fund, Knowledge Assets Grant Fund

The Knowledge Asset Grant Fund supports organisations across the public sector to develop, repurpose, commercialise, and expand the use of their Knowledge Assets (KAs).

There are three streams of funding available, so it’s important that you familiarise yourself with the Explore, Expand and Extend grants, to find out which one you should apply to for your project.

See our summary of the key differences below or read the full blog for more detail from Michael Rignall, Funding Lead at GOTT.

There are two key differences between funding streams:

  • The amount of money available under each stream
  • The application process:
    • For Explore grants you are only assessed on your application
    • For Expand grants you are assessed on your application and your written response to feedback and questions from our panel
    • For Extend grants you are assessed on your application and a short virtual presentation, including questions and answers, that you will deliver to our panel

Explore

You can apply for a maximum of £25,000 under the Explore stream of the grant fund.

Explore grants can be used to help you start thinking about different possible applications of your Knowledge Asset and its potential impact. For example, you could use the grant for market research, and to start building your evidence base for further development of your innovation.

The application form for Explore grants is shorter and requires less detail than the larger grants, and you won’t need to attend any meetings to discuss your project.

Regardless of whether your application is successful you will be given feedback. You can also re-submit your project taking on board our suggestions in the next round of funding.

Expand

You can apply for between £25,001 and £100,000 under the Explore stream of the grant fund.

You will need to give more detail about your project on the Expand application form than with Explore Grants. You will also need to provide evidence supporting your project from previous work, this could include work that has been funded by an Explore grant.

Before it’s decided if your project is awarded funding, you will be sent feedback or questions by our panel, and you will be asked to respond in one page or less. Our panel will then take your response and initial application into consideration to reach a decision.

As with the Explore grant, you will be given feedback regardless of whether you are awarded funding.

Extend

You can apply for between £100,001 and £250,000 under the Extend stream of the grant fund.

The application form is the same for both Expand and Extend grants. Because more money is available under Extend grants, our panel will be looking for projects which show a high level of planning and evidence that our funding will allow the impact of your work to go further.

You will need to attend an online meeting to give a short presentation on your project and answer questions from our panellists, and you will be given feedback on your project regardless of the outcome.
